Dear Parents and Guardians
What an incredible week we have had here at Stawamus School in both Cultural Journeys and Learning Expeditions.
We were honored to be able to make authentic traditional drums with Darrel McCullough and Char Williams. They showed all of our CJ kids how to stretch the elk skin over the wooden frame and then tie it all together with sinew. Amazing experience was had by all. The drums sound amazing and we are excited to hear them being played by the students.
In Learning Expeditions they are working very hard on their projects and learning about budgeting and assessing the costs for the farm upgrade. They are also going to start prepping for construction proposals for the project. The LEX team puts out an amazing newsletter every week so please make sure to go and check it out! www.sd48.stawamus.org
WINTER GIFT SHOPPING EXPERIENCE will be once again be taking place this year. We will ensure students are able to experience this event following COVID protocols. The event will take place from Tuesday, December 15th – Thursday, December 17th. Classes will be taken through the “store” by class during the school day. We are now accepting donations of lightly used or new: accessories (jewelry, scarves, sun glasses) toys, books, and small household items (no clothing or shoes please) as well as wrapping paper and gift bags. We will sell these items to the students for $1 per item and gift wrapping will be available. This will give students a chance to shop for Christmas gifts for their family and friends.
FOUNDATION SKILLS ASSESSMENT: Each year in British Columbia, all students in grade 4 and 7 write the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA). This is an assessment of students’ reading, writing and numeracy skills and it is aligned with British Columbia Provincial Curriculum. It provides the Ministry of Education, School Districts, and Schools with a “snapshot” of what our province’s students are able to do well, and where they need continued support.
The assessment is organized into both hand written and computer based components. Teachers will administer the assessment in small chunks over a period of a few weeks from January 18th to February 26th, 2021. Please see the attached letter for more information.
This is the time for all of us to be doing our part… make sure to mask up and social distance, wash your hands but most importantly be kind to each other!
Have a great weekend!
